Sci-fi meets rococo in Missy Mazzoli’s mind-bending tone poem Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), which opens this space-inspired program. The main feature of the evening is Thea Musgrave’s oboe concerto Helios, performed by German soloist Juri Vallentin, where we follow the journey of the Greek sun god across the celestial heavens. Finally, Robert Schumann’s more earthbound, jubilant First Symphony, also known as the “Spring Symphony,” brings us back down to earth.
A Journey Through the Solar System
Orbits take center stage in this evening’s space-inspired program. It begins with the acclaimed New York composer Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), an exciting piece just under ten minutes long that explores the various orbits in our solar system.
Here, baroque stylistic elements meet the future in a twisted soundscape with breathtaking, imaginary sci-fi effects. Following that, we embark on the sun’s journey across the heavens in Thea Musgrave’s Helios for oboe, composed when Musgrave was 96 years old. Musgrave’s passion for telling a story through music is once again evident in this twenty-minute, sensually dramatic work. In Greek mythology, Helios travels across the sky in his burning chariot before descending into the realm of night and then returning with the sea currents to his golden palace in the east. This progression is delicately portrayed by the orchestra in dialogue with the esteemed German oboe soloist Juri Vallentin, who takes on the role of Helios.
After the break, the orchestra performs Schumann’s life-affirming and verdantly blooming Spring Symphony. A perfect way to return to earth and the earthly. On the podium is Norrlandsoperan’s very own Eduardo Strausser.
Tickets for the concert and Sara kulturhus subscription for classical music will be released on Friday Aprll 4 at 10:00 AM via sarakulturhus.se, ticketmaster.se, and Skellefteå Tourist Center.
